The Letter.

When Thomas Edison was a young boy, he came home from school with a sealed letter from his teacher. He handed it to his mother, curious about what it said. She opened it, read silently for a moment, and then looked at him with tears in her eyes. “Your teacher says you are a genius,” she told him. “School is too small for your brilliant mind, and you must be taught at home.” From that day forward, she became his teacher, encouraging his curiosity and creativity.

The Truth.

Years later, after his mother had passed away and Edison had become one of the greatest inventors and businessmen in history, he found that same letter tucked away in an old family chest. When he opened it for the first time, it didn’t say he was a genius at all. In fact, the truth was quite the opposite.

His teacher wrote that Thomas was “mentally slow” and unfit for school. In that moment, Edison realized that his mother had changed the entire course of his life and world history because she not only loved her son, but because she believed in him. Before the world could put limits on Thomas and make predictions about his worth, she told him a different story–planting a seed that there was nothing out of his reach if he paired his creativity with a strong work ethic.

The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy.

In many ways, our lives are shaped by the stories we come to believe about ourselves. The expectations we accept, the words we hear, and the possibilities we imagine all influence the choices we make and the lives we ultimately create.
